Social Media Trolls Sparks Debates on Toxic Sports Culture
The controversies around toxic fan culture sparked conversations about increasing “hate industry” around sports fandom online. This recently involved Travis Head’s wife Jessica Head and Shreyas Iyer’s sister Shresta Iyer who faced trolling and social media abuse.
The issue began after an on-field confrontations between Virat Kohli and Travis Head during the RCB vs SRH match. Many videos of verbal exchange between both the cricketers and reportedly an awkward handshake went viral immediately and soon after Jessica revealed to receive multiple abusive and threatening messages. She said that the situation reminded her of the trolling they faced after 2023 ODI World Cup.
Similar to this Shreyas Iyer’s sister Shresta Iyer also faced the social media abuse after the Punjab Kings narrowly missed the IPL playoffs. The trolls involved the old fun video of PBKS and KKR banter while targeting her. She responded back strongly and criticized the people who spreads hate over harmless content which gained wide attention as it highlighted how player’s family members are dragged into such controversies for no reason.
This further triggered wider discussions around toxic fan culture and online harassment. Akash Chopra particularly described such fans as “hypocrites” and many commentators emphasized that fandom is becoming more aggressive especially on social media platforms. While the incident has renewed the demand for stricter rules to control the increasing online hate as well as to support healthier sports discussions.
