Gunnet Monga is well-identified for taking Indian independent cinema to global audiences and her productions have been featured in many international film festivals. She is a producer and an entrepreneur who is known as the founder of Sikhya Entertainment. She has been recognized for producing critically acclaimed independent films and documentaries.

Born on November 21, 1983 in New Delhi she belonged to a middle-class Punjabi family. Her childhood played key role in shaping her character and personality as she faced financial and family struggles while growing. Guneet acquired the interest in storytelling and media from the very young age and watching her mother facing hardships further motivated her to become financially independent.

After completing her schooling, she decided to pursue mass communication from Madhubala Institute of Mass Communication and Media Management. Her education laid the foundation for her future career as it gave her exposure to filmmaking, production and media management.

Gunnet began her career during the college years when she was still a student, this not only helped her learn things but also supported her practical understanding in filmmaking. She worked as a cinema announcer, event host and in promotional activities before joining productions as a production coordinator. Moving to Mumbai significantly supported her career growth, while initially she worked behind the scenes but working with established filmmakers further enhanced her skills as well as understanding of proper filmmaking. Instead of focusing on commercial cinema, she built her credibility in cinema through unconventional and meaningful cinema.

The year 2008 came with a more visible growth with the foundation of Sikhya Entertainment, a company that provided support to unique and impactful story. By promoting independent filmmakers and focusing on more socially relevant content with global appeal Sikhya Entertainment has become one of India’s leading independent film studios.

Over the time Guneet has produced many critically acclaimed films including The Lunchbox, Massan, Pagglait, Kathal and Kill that received appreciations from Indian and global audiences. These films not only received widespread praise by showcasing in international film festivals but significantly brought Indian independent cinema to global audiences.

Moving forward, her work honoured her with global recognition through Academy Awards for projects and established her as one of country’s most celebrated producer. As an executive producer of Period. End of Sentence, she won Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject in 2019 and her produced film The Elephant Whisperers also won her Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film in 2023. This was more than her personal success as it significantly strengthened India’s presence in international film events.

 Guneet’s success was never an immediate outcome of efforts but it was built on consistent hard work and the years of persistence. During the initial career years, she struggled with finance as funding for specifically independent films remained a constant challenge. Moreover, she entered the film industry without any connections or background and most importantly establishing credibility in a highly competitive environment was beyond ease.
