P. Sumathi Creates History, Becomes First Women Law Secretary
P. Sumathi has been appointed as the secretary of Tamil Nadu Law Department and assumed charge on June 2, 2026. This marks the historic move as she now becomes the first ever woman to hold post in the history of department. This appointment is being viewed as an attempt to increase women representation in senior level positions.
The state government depends on the Law department for legal advice and it performs activities like drafting bills, reviewing legal matters and to handle government-related litigations. As being appointed for the role of secretary, Sumathi would be responsible to oversee the department’s administrative and legal functions.
While it is a major achievement for Sumathi, her appointment stands as the milestone for women representation in governance. The move marked the end of long-standing gender barrier existed in one of India’s important administrative departments. Moreover, it also reflects growth of women in senior leadership roles within the government institutions.
