Challenges and Achievements:
The three decades career of Dr.Nipa in anesthesia has presented numerous professional and personal challenges, each offering opportunities for growth and learning. Operating on patients ranging from a day old infant undergoing major surgery to individuals over 100 years old, particularly those with underlying cardiac conditions, has been demanding.
She believes that the challenging part of her career is operating on newborns due to their delicate physiology and heightened sensitivity to anesthesia and surgery. Similarly, elderly patients often have complex medical histories and compromised organ function, necessitating careful management to ensure safety and successful outcomes. Navigating these cases demands not only technical expertise but also empathy and a deep understanding of individual patient needs.
As a single mother, one of her most significant personal challenges has been balancing the responsibilities of a rigorous career in healthcare with raising her son to be independent and compassionate. Nurturing his growth into a responsible and kind individual amidst the complexities of critical medical cases has required meticulous time management and unwavering dedication.
Anesthesia is often a behind-the-scenes field, where the anesthesiologist remains largely unknown to most patients undergoing surgery. However, one of the most gratifying experiences of Dr. Nipa is when patients, both known and unknown, insist on having her as their anesthesiologist. This recognition and trust swell her heart with pride and set a positive example for her colleagues in the field.
When talking about her achievements she said “It's challenging to pinpoint a single significant achievement because, in this profession, every day presents an opportunity to make a difference. Each successful surgery, every life saved, and every patient comforted during their most vulnerable moments is an achievement in itself”.
She is also an ACLS and BCLS instructor, she had the privilege of training the general public, including students of all ages, in CPR. Empowering individuals to save lives when immediate medical help is unavailable is incredibly fulfilling and resonates deeply with my grandfather's vision for me to make a tangible impact on people's lives.
Furthermore, she has conducted various medical camps in rural areas in collaboration with NGOs, the Rotary Club, and the Lions Club. These camps have provided critical healthcare services to underserved populations, including:
- 500 cataract surgeries
- 200 cleft lip and palate surgeries
- 200 polio corrective surgeries in the pediatric group
- 350 CTEV (Congenital Talipes Equinovarus) correction surgeries in children
- 500 laparoscopic tubal ligation procedures
Additionally, she organized and led Compression Only Life Support (COLS) training sessions for various housing societies, schools, colleges, companies, and public places like gardens, the Gateway of India, and Sanjay Gandhi National Park. These sessions have helped raise awareness and equip individuals with the skills to respond effectively in emergencies, furthering my mission to make a tangible impact on people's lives.
She also receive India's Best Doctors' Award 2024 - Excellence Award in Anaesthesia, International Healthcare Awards, 2024 - Healthcare Icon(Anaesthesia), "Best Doctors Mumbai 2023" as Honorary Anaesthesiologist (Outlook Health Magazine), "Top Doctors Mumbai 2023" in Anaesthesiology (India Today Health) and "Top Doctors Mumbai 2022" in Anaesthesiology.
