Dr. Jigna Garasia: Healing Hearts, Building Hope, and Living Beyond Medicine
"NEVER GIVE UP. Try, try, and try until you succeed."
When Dr. Jigna Garasia speaks about her journey as a gynecologist and infertility specialist, her words carry the weight of lived experience and the quiet courage of someone who has faced both professional and personal storms. Today, she serves at Nadkarni Hospital & Test Tube Baby Center in Killa Pardi, Gujarat, as an infertility consultant and colposcopist. But her path to medicine—and to her calling—was anything but straightforward.
A Calling Shaped by Life, Not Choice
“I never initially wanted to become a doctor,” Dr. Garasia reflects with candor. “I became one due to circumstances, not choice. I had never imagined I would become a gynecologist, but life had its own plans.”
Her medical journey began in 1995 at B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, an institution she proudly calls her alma mater. But it wasn’t until she witnessed her first delivery that everything changed. “Seeing the smile on the faces of family members brought me immense happiness and inspired me to do even more for such patients.”
Infertility became a deeply personal mission. After conceiving her own daughter following five years of marriage, she experienced firsthand the societal pressure women endure. “Only a woman can truly understand another woman’s struggle,” she says. That understanding drove her to dedicate her career to supporting couples facing similar pain.
The People Who Shaped Her Path
Dr. Garasia credits her mentor, the late Dr. Purnima Nadkarni, for inspiring her to go further. “She was a legend in the field, and her dedication to women’s health left a deep mark on me,” she recalls. With her mentor’s guidance, she learned not only to treat medical issues but also to approach each patient with empathy and resolve.
Her family, too, has been her anchor. Her husband and daughter, Naisargi, have stood by her through every high and low. “Their constant support has been my strength,” she says.
Surviving Life’s Toughest Tests
Between 2016 and 2019, Dr. Garasia’s life took an unexpected turn. Health complications led to major surgery in which part of her intestine was removed. “There was always a big question about my survival and fitness,” she says. Yet she emerged from the ordeal stronger and wiser. “Today, I am a rare disease survivor living my life smoothly and fully. Through all of this, I came to understand myself better and learned how to manage my problems.”
These years of uncertainty taught her resilience on an entirely different level. They also inspired her memoir, “Beyond Medicine,” in which she shares the lessons she learned both as a doctor and as a patient.
Finding Balance in Self-Care
Despite her demanding profession, Dr. Garasia makes it a point to dedicate two hours every day to herself. “That’s my time—whether it’s the gym, yoga, gardening, or meditation. Whatever gives me happiness, I do it,” she says. These moments of reflection and physical wellness are not indulgences but essential practices that help her recharge and show up fully for her patients.
The Heart of Her Work: Empathy and Determination
As an infertility consultant, Dr. Garasia sees pain, frustration, and societal stigma up close. Yet she also sees the joy of transformation. Each successful pregnancy, each smile on a patient’s face, reinforces her purpose. “These experiences shaped me into the doctor I am today,” she says with quiet pride.
Her message to all women is both simple and profound:
“Live your life to the fullest. Be financially independent. Believe in yourself.”
Words She Lives By
When asked about the quote that guides her, she responds without hesitation:
“NEVER GIVE UP. Try, try, and try until you succeed.”
It’s a philosophy she has lived through personal illness, societal pressure, and professional hurdles—and one she now shares with every woman who feels weighed down by expectations or setbacks.
Looking Back, Moving Forward
Today, as she reflects on nearly three decades in medicine, Dr. Garasia sees not just the milestones but the personal transformation behind them. From a reluctant medical student to a compassionate infertility specialist, from a patient facing uncertainty to an author sharing her story, her life has been a testament to perseverance.
“When I look back, I can truly visualize how far I’ve come, and how all these challenges have shaped the person I am,” she says.
Her journey is not just about medical expertise—it’s about humanity, courage, and the relentless pursuit of purpose. And while her patients know her as the doctor who never gives up, her own life shows exactly why that mantra rings so true.
