Delhi’s first all- women led police station

Delhi Police is expected to open the first all- women police station within few weeks in Delhi which would be named Sabzi Mandi Police Station as it is supposed to open in North Delhi at the place.

The core reason behind the step is to create safety, sensitivity and accessible environment for women. It encourages more reporting of cases without fear and aims to improve the investigation processes, complaint handling and accountability for women.

The need for this call is due to the fact that the current cases are handled by local police station and Crime Against Women (CAW) cells, that only handles cases against dowry and marital disputes, which in result promotes delays and inefficiency. While this new initiative would actually file FIRs and would conduct investigations. What makes it even better is that it would be fully female staffed and is supposed to be headed by women Station House Officer.

It will handle the number of cases including the cases of assault, stalking, harassment, rape, molestation, POCSO cases- crime with minor girls, while the handling of murder and cybercrime against women are under discussion. It is likely to be an addition with existing CAW cell at Sabzi Mandi or at the alternative location which is being considered as Delhi Cantonment police station.

The move is perceived as a push to strengthen the response to crimes against women, its success might lead its expansion to other districts of Delhi. However, Delhi also has a history of past initiatives regarding such improvements like Pink Booths which achieved limited success due to lack of authority, but the new one is still holds hope of change for betterment and improvement in systems for women.
