India Women Sweep Series As Devika Vaidya Returns

India’s women have spent the past week doing what winning teams do, which is making it look routine. The series was a clean 3-0 sweep for India. Harmanpreet Kaur carried the bat with 91 off 55 balls. It came immediately after Shafali Verma set the tone, roaring away to 50 off 34.   Nandani snagged three wickets for the hosts for a comfortable result to their series win.  The ODI series then opened with a comfortable win built on a century from Rawal and four wickets from Shree Charani. The scorecards are impressive, but one of the more interesting stories around this squad is not on them.

Debuts, Big Hits and a Captain Who Sounds Relaxed

Part of the charm of a series like this is how many people get a first chance. Jintimani Kalita played her first ODI for India in the historic series opener against Zimbabwe, and the second ODI is scheduled for 25 October at Vadodara. 1st, Harmanpreet, who now describes it as a post-captaincy phase, said she is no longer under pressure and will just go out and enjoy her cricket, which was reflected in an innings where she played with the freedom of someone with nothing to lose. 2smriti Mandhana explained the reason behind switching the batting order to facilitate more time at the crease for the middle order, a small decision, but it speaks volumes about a team that thinks long term.

Coming Back After Motherhood

The quieter story belongs to Devika Vaidya. The allrounder stepped away from cricket at her peak to start a family and has worked her way back from motherhood, and she has said she had not seen many athletes return to the sport after maternity leave but was sure she could. The International Cricket Council has subsequently developed return-to-play protocols for cricketers after pregnancy, which involve support for cricketers as they return to the game in terms of medical and physical, as well as emotional support. She is reported as being prepared to play at the international level again, but it is not clear if she has been selected for the side.  Her Devika Vaidya comeback matters partly because returning to sport after motherhood has rarely been treated as ordinary, and a young player watching can now picture a career that includes a family and a second innings.

Women Achievers in Indiawill continue to root for both the stories,  that of sweeps and returnees, because an admirable team that wins a series is what it's all about, but a team that finds room for a mother to compete is transforming sport as a career. That is saying to every young girl who is watching that a passion for sport has no expiry date attached to it. When sporting institutions take returning mothers seriously, this time with real infrastructure and sincerity, it is shattering the line that family life mercifully terminates a woman's career with a whimper, not a bang. That is what a comeback really means.
