Anushka Sen become first Indian actor to work in Korean film Industry

There are milestones and then there are moments that redefine what is possible. For Anushka Sen, the summer of 2026 marks both. Fifteen years into her acting career, the 23-year-old has become the first Indian actor to lead a South Korean film- a feat that feels as much like a cultural bridge as it does a personal triumph. Now a lead actor in South Korean film Jeju Olle. This is also her first commercial film, and her acting project performed largely in English.

The film in question is Jeju Olle, a romantic musical drama representing a cultural collaboration between India and South Korea. Anushka plays Alisha. The film directed by Jin Kwang-Kyo.

A dream rooted in pandemic

Anushka’s journey to Jeju Island did not begin on a film set- it began on a couch, during the long, uncertain months of COVID pandemic. A self-confessed huge fan of the Hallyu wave, K-pop and K-drama. Eternal Monarch among her favourite series. Jeju Olle, she has said, is that dream made real.

The choice of a romantic drama was no accident. Anushka noted that Jeju Olle holds special importance because it is a genre she has always loved. There is also a personal touch she has spoken of warmly — she shares her last name with her character Alisha Sen in the film, a detail that made the project doubly special for her.

A new industry, a new standard

For Anushka, stepping into a Korean film set meant more than learning a new lines, it meant adapting into an entirely different professional culture. She described the Korean crew meticulous precision, noting that director Jin Kwang and his assistant director created around 360 pages of storyboards in seven days. As a filmmaking student herself, she found this approach incredible and instructive.

The road that led here

Anushka Sen was born on 4 August 2002, in Ranchi, and later moved to Mumbai with her family. She began her career as a child actor in 2009 and rose to national fame in 2012 playing Meher in Sab TV’s Baalveer. Her portrayal of Rani Lakshmi Bai in Jhansi Ki Rani cemented her place in the hearts of Indian television audiences. In the years since, she has diversified steadily- appearing in Amazon Prime Video’s teen drama Dil Dosti Dilemma, and featuring in web series like Kill Dill- the Heartbreak Club.

Her connection with South Korea, however, predates Jeju Olle. In 2023, she was appointed Honorary Ambassador of Korean Tourism- a recognition that reflected not just her popularity but her genuine cultural affinity with the country.

A story bigger than film

The film has been created for audiences across multiple regions and was shot entirely on Jeju Island, with plans to release it in South Korea, India, and several other Asian and Middle Eastern countries. Its reach, in many ways, mirror Anushka’s own- an actress who began in front of a single camera on a children’s fantasy show and now stands at the intersection of two of Asia’s most powerful entertainment cultures.

In Jeju Olle, Alisha travels to a distant Island to make peace with grief and find herself again. In her own story, Anushka Sen has done something remarkably similar- and in doing so, she has opened a door that, one hopes, many more Indian artists will walk through.
