The UN Call- the urgent fight to end FGM
The statements by multiple UN Organizations including the UN Women, UNICEF, World Health Organization and UNFAP was released on International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation 2026. They stressed on the need for immediate and stronger efforts to progress towards the ending of FGM, as the process is slowing down despite the fact that the 2030 target is getting closer.
They brought the numbers on the table with facts that over 230 million girls and women have already undergone FGM and around 4.5 million girls are at risk in 2026 alone, what makes it even worse is that many of them are very young often under 5 years of age.
Another concern arises as the funds for programs working to end FGM are declining. At the same time the backlash against gender equality initiatives is growing, which is ultimately contributing to weakening prevention efforts. As a result, the progress made over the years is at risk of slowing and reversing.
Furthermore, rising number of Female Genital Mutilation cases are being performed by healthcare professionals. One in every four girl is undergoing through this trend which is creating false impression that this practice is safe and acceptable. The practice must be eliminating with time but it is actually being normalized with growing numbers, which the UN considers dangerous for upcoming generations.
The UN in particular made call for more funds to end FGM. So, that it could benefit women with better health and increase their economic participation. It focuses on education, awareness, community change and other long- term goals.
