Lighting Up the Future: The Inspirational Journey of Smt. Vandanaa Chauhan

Illuminating Dreams with Determination

In the luminous world of urban design, Smt. Vandanaa Chauhan stands as a radiant beacon of resilience, innovation, and purpose. An Electrical Engineer by profession and the visionary Founder of VEC Design Studio (formerly Vaishnavi Electrical Consultancy), her career spans over three decades of excellence. With her expertise illuminating cities, flyovers, parks, and even international events, she has transformed the art of lighting into a mission of beautification and empowerment.

From her beginnings in Nagpur to creating waves in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Vandanaa’s journey reflects not just professional triumphs but a personal saga of courage and conviction. “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful,” she shares — a mantra that has carried her through challenges and led her to national acclaim.

Breaking Barriers in a Male-Dominated Industry

For a woman entering the field of electrical engineering, a domain traditionally dominated by men, the journey was far from easy. Yet Vandanaa, driven by a passion for engineering, creativity, and innovation, did not let stereotypes define her path. From 1998 to 2005, she served in various roles in Nagpur, and post her relocation to Pimpri-Chinchwad, she not only established herself as a leading consultant in government projects but also founded her own firm.

Her venture, now known as VEC Design Studio, has become synonymous with urban beautification, working on projects for municipal corporations, smart city initiatives, and public works departments. Her portfolio includes prestigious lighting projects such as the Bhakti Shakti Flyover, the LED Garden in Atal Bihari Vajpayee Park, the Mahakumbh Mela in Haridwar, and the G20 Summit illumination in Chatrapati Sambhajinagar — an endeavor that earned her praise from the Hon’ble Prime Minister himself.

Urban Illumination

Vandanaa’s design philosophy brings together aesthetics, utility, and technology. Her lighting work on landmarks like the Necklace View and Panchganga Ghat in Kolhapur, Ram Jhula in Nagpur, and glow gardens across various cities is a testament to her ability to fuse functionality with visual storytelling.

Beyond public spaces, she has also made significant contributions to infrastructure development with projects like the Aundh Ravet BRT road and the Bopkhel Alandi Road. Her latest creation, a 13D light and sound show at Fort Panhala, was felicitated by Hon. CM Mr. Devendra Fadnavis and stands as a cultural milestone promoting tourism through immersive technology.

Juggling Roles, Wearing Many Hats

Behind her professional accolades lies a story of striking balance. Vandanaa has gracefully navigated the dual roles of a devoted mother and a pioneering professional. Raising her son, Aayush, who has earned a Guinness World Record in skating and won hundreds of medals by the age of 14, while leading high-stakes national projects speaks volumes of her time management, emotional resilience, and unwavering commitment to both family and career.

“Maintaining a balance between my career and personal life is something I prioritize and work hard to achieve,” she says. Her ability to set boundaries, manage time effectively, and practice self-care is what fuels her continued excellence.

The Leader with a Vision and a Heart

Inspired by formidable historical women like Jijau and Rani Laxmibai, Vandanaa’s leadership style combines calm composure with unwavering command. Her community engagement speaks volumes — since 2023, she has served as Secretary in her society, extending her dedication to development beyond professional boundaries.

Recognitions such as the Pimpri-Chinchwad Achiever Award (2017), Face of Inspiration Award (2023), Shivshree Award, Uttarrang Award, Navdurga Title, and the Manikarnika Lifetime Achievers Award (2024) are just a few symbols of her lasting impact. Yet, she remains grounded and focused on the future, with major upcoming projects lined up in Nashik and Ujjain for the Kumbh Melas of 2027 and 2028, alongside beautification plans for cities like Indore and Mumbai.

Empowering the Next Generation

At the core of Vandanaa’s legacy lies her mission to empower women in engineering. “I want to see more women in leadership roles, especially in fields traditionally dominated by men,” she affirms. Her advice to young women? “Embrace your individuality. Pursue education and skill development — knowledge opens doors. Support and uplift each other, and remember, even small wins are worth celebrating.”

She believes every challenge is a hidden opportunity for growth. Whether it’s navigating bureaucracy, pushing innovation in a competitive market, or advocating for her projects’ value, Vandanaa continues to break ceilings with grace and grit.

A Legacy Illuminated by Purpose

Looking ahead, Vandanaa is not only focused on creative expansion in Nagpur and Pimpri-Chinchwad but is also determined to see her work admired by high-profile figures across the industry. Her vision is to leave behind more than just well-lit streets and iconic parks — she aspires to build an ecosystem where women thrive, cities shine brighter, and engineering becomes a path of expression and empowerment.

Her story is a beautiful blend of light, strength, and service — a journey where every bulb lit is a testament to dreams nurtured in darkness, and every landmark illuminated is a mark of legacy built with resilience.

As the world watches her brighten the cities of tomorrow, one can only feel inspired by the woman who proves, with every project, that lighting is not just about visibility — it's about vision.
