Taylor Swift seeks to trademark her voice
Reports claim that one of the most loved global singer Taylor Swift is trademarking her voice which indicates that is trying to own her voice legally. But it more likely to be an attempt of her to protect vocal likeliness and identity in the AI era. However, the traditional trademark protects brand identifiers like logo, names and slogans, not the human voices.
The core reason behind the idea is the growing AI voice cloning as the AI tools can now replicate artists voices effortlessly with high accuracy, creating songs that sounds authentic. This has significantly contributed in the rise of viral, unauthorized tracks. To address the issue organizations such as Recording Industry Association of America are advocating stricter rules as the artists fears the loss of creativity control, income and authenticity.
As the issue is of high concern the government may suggest possible legal changes in the law. The officials are likely to introduce clearer laws for AI generated likeliness and voice rights. It will also have a significant impact on content creation and music as the introduction of stricter licensing system for using any artist voice even the AI generated ones can result in reduced freedom of unofficial or unauthorized remixes or AI covers.
