Rekha’s Umrao Jaan to make European Premiere at UK Asian Film Festival 2026 in stunning 4K Restoration

 

One of the Hindi Cinema most beloved masterpieces is returning to the big screen. A newly restored print of the 1981 period musical drama UMRO JAAN is set for its European premiere at the Tongues on the Fire UK Asian Film Festival (UKAFF), which opens in London next week. The opening screening at the British Film Institute (BFI) IMAX will be accompanied by a talk by the filmmaker Muzaffar Ali.

The celebration of the film will not be limited to London alone. The restored version is scheduled to screen on May 7,9 and 10 at multiple venues across the UK – including Tyneside Cinema on Thursday 7 May at 7 PM, Phoenix Leicester on Saturday 9 May at 7 PM and succeeded by Q&A with Muzaffar Ali, Lanternhouse Cinema at Cumbernauld Theatre on Sunday 10 May.

The film, set in 19th century in Lucknow, it follows the journey of Umro Jaan from a kidnapped child to a renowned courtesan and poet. Its evocative storytelling, memorable music, and rich visuals have made it a landmark in Indian cinema, capturing longing, artistry, and resilience with lasting impact.

The 1981 version, starring Rekha, is a cult classic that won four National Awards, while both films are based on Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s novel Umrao Jaan Ada. Rekha’s portrayal of the lead role remains one of the most iconic performances in Indian film history, with her mesmerizing depiction of Dil Cheez Kya Hai still cherished by the audiences across generations.

This not the first time the restored version has been featured at a major event – it was also screened at the 56th International Film Festival of India, and was re-released in Delhi on June 27, 2025.

 The director Muzaffir Ali once said the film is “timeless” and “ageless” adding that it “was meant for a time 150 years ago” and “is still vibrant and alive as that period would have been.” Ali has indicated plans to take umrao jaan to OTT platforms.

The celebration of South Asian cinema- with Umrao Jaan’s luminous return to the screen standing as its most eagerly awaited highlight.
