Jahnvi’s Role in Peddi Sparks Objectification Debate
After the release of Peddi, Jahnvi Kapoor is facing criticism for her role in the film. She played the character of Achiyamma, which is being alleged to be portrayed hypersexualize unnecessarily. A certain section of people argued that the camera angles, close-up shots and romantic sequences were represented in a way that it appeared like objectifying women rather than providing her with any meaningful role.
Following the backlash, the film’s director Buchi Babu Sana responded with apology while clarifying that the film never had intent to disrespect women or representing the character in an insensitive manner. While making the audience concern in mind he announced that certain scenes from the film would be either modified or removed completely as well as emphasized that women should always be portrayed with dignity and respect.
In respond to criticism, many actors also defended Jahnvi while stressing that actors perform roles as per envisioned by filmmakers. Namely Jagapathi and others emphasized that criticism should be followed on the creative choices, not the person herself. This controversy further sparked discussions around women representation in cinema, with many calling for more stronger, impactful, and respectful roles for female.
