IOC to limit women participation in upcoming Olympic competitions
International Olympic Committee (IOC) made a major policy change on the women’s participation in sports. The rule will be applied from upcoming Olympic Games 2028, at Los Angeles. It states that only biological females will be able to participate in these games while excluding the women participation from other categories.
The eligibility of women athlete is to be determined from “One- in- a Lifetime” sex test. However, the conflicts argue that it prevents the participation of transgender women and athletes with difference in sexual development (DSD), or those who have undergone male puberty.
Moving forward, the (IOC) in its stands by the claim that the decision has made after reviewing many scientific methods and talks with experts in different sports field across the world. Moreover, the rule is made for women safety purpose and fairness in sports as the slightest physical difference impacts performance of athletes.
The (IOC) clarified that the rule is limited to elite sports competition and not for grassroot level or recreational sports. The committee also stressed that all athletes must be treated with respect and dignity, the rule is for fairness not to bring impartiality in games.
As 2028 Olympics approach, the decision is expected to shape the future of women sports globally. While the controversies on fairness and inclusion continues, the (IOC) ensures the equal and fair conduct of sports competition for women.
