Inunganbi ends India’s 13-years medal drought with bronze

Inunganbi Takhellambam has ended the drought of 13 year wait with her win at the Asian Judo Championships. She not only competed at the championship but secured a bronze medal for India by defeating Lkhavadulam Sarantsetseg, while her victory came through a decisive chokehold submission.

The medal gains its significance from the historical context as the last judo medal that the country won came back in 2013 with Angom Anita Chanu win. This 13 years gap indicates towards the stagnation or lack of podium finishes in Indian Judo at the global or continental stage. It highlights how much gender gap still exist and how rare these wins are when it comes to major sports achievements by women.

Moreover, Angom Anita Chanu is now the coach of national Judo team. The coaches in judo wears tracksuits during regular rounds and the formal blazer is wore only during the medal bouts. The fact that Angom has been carrying that blazer since years and the medal finally provided her with the reason to wear it is what makes the win even special and appeals emotionally.

Despite that Inunganbi has made a history with such a achievement, she remains measured and grounded. She reflects confidence for upcoming competitions like commonwealth Games and Asian Games. She indicates toward her ambition but also awareness of the higher competitive standards of games.
