In a landmark achievement of Indian women’s hockey, the Indian team scripted a magnificent comeback story at the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup 2026, defeating hosts New Zealand 2-0 in a dominant final at the North Harbour National Hockey Centre in Auckland on Sunday. With this victory, India claimed their second FIH women’s Nations Cup title and secured promotion to the next FIH Women’s Pro League for the next season- a stunning turnaround for a side that had been relegated only a year ago.

India journey to tournament

India journey through tournament is nothing short of exceptional. The team remained unbeaten throughout their campaign defeating USA (3-2), Japan (2-1), and Uruguay (3-2) in pool A matches, before registering a commanding win by 6-0 against Chile in the semi-final. Five matches played, five matches won -a record that speaks volume about the team resolve, discipline, and hunger to reclaim their place among the elite.

The campaign was a masterclass in resilience. Against the USA in the opening match, India faced an early 0-2 deficit before staging a stunning comeback, with Deepika netting a brace and Navneet Kaur adding a third to seal a 3-2 win. That fighting spirit set the tone for everything that followed.

The finals

In the summit clash against defending champions New Zealand, India was sharp side from the first whistle. Navneet Kaur struck in the 4th minute. Covering India’s first penalty corner of the match to hand the visitors an early lead. The veteran striker’s composure under pressure was exactly what the team needed on the biggest stage.

Sunelita Toppo then doubled India’s advantage in the 15th minute, extending the lead to 2-0 and putting    India firmly in control of the contest. With two goals in the bag inside the first quarter, India’s experienced defence locked down and refused to give New Zealand a way back into the game.

With seven minutes remaining, Nikki Pradhan received a yellow card for an uncontrolled tackle, and New Zealand pressed the numerical advantage by firm, not allowing the Black Sticks into their circle, and when the final whistle blew, India had secured a clean 2-0 win.

From Relegation to redemption

The significance of this title goes far beyond the trophy. India had been relegated to the FIH Nations Cup after finishing at the bottom of the table in the 2024-25 Pro League season. To return just one year later- not merely as participants, but as champions – is a testament to the character of this squad and the work put in by the coaching staff.

This is India’s second FIH Nations Cup title, having won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2022. Back-to-back Nations Cup glory underscores India’s growing strength as a force in international women’s hockey.

What lies ahead

Wining the FIH Nations Cup earns India promotion back into the FIH Pro League 2026-27 season, which will also double up as a LA 2028 Olympic qualifier for hockey.

India’s women in blue came to New Zealand not just to participate- they came to conquer, and they left as champions.
