Huma Qurershi Raises Questions on Industry Inequality

 

Huma Qurershi in her recent interview at Cannes film festival 2026 openly spoke about the industrial bias in Bollywood. She highlighted that female-led movies in Indian entertainment cinema often struggle with visibility and scale. She also stated that women-led films do not get the same industry backing as male-led films as well as pointed out that big budget and large-scale investments are mostly reserved for male stars.

Her statements reflected as the direct criticism of Bollywood gender imbalance. She also emphasized that the industry tries to put actors in box, as when the actress gets successful in one character the industry begins to offer her with similar roles after one successful role. She also shared that she continuously works to prove such kind of assumptions wrong by intentionally choosing diverse projects that allows her to explore different roles.

Moreover, Huma has spoken about not fitting into Bollywood’s traditional beauty standards. She also opened up about body shaming and pressure she faced to meet the unrealistic appearance expectations. These recent comments by her reinforces that talent is still judged on the basis of narrow visual standards, this further leads to broader debates on inclusivity in Indian cinema.

While concluding she stressed on confidence & self-worth and stating that she knows what impact she brings with her presence in the projects as well as emphasized that she no longer relies on external validation or industry approval. She also said that her growing experience and age in career made her feel secure which reflects as a message of self-belief despite systematic bias.
