HOW DEEPIKA PADUKONE SHIFTED THE CONVERSATION ON MENTAL HEALTH
There are moments in public life that quietly change something — not through a breaking news or a grand speech, but through one person choosing reality over image. For India, that instant came in 2015, when Deepika Padukone — one of the biggest stars in Bollywood, a woman on the cover of every magazine, the face of countless brands — sat in front of a camera and said: "I was depressed.I needed help.” It’s not so simple to say on the camera about mental health where people are ready to judge. But that were in many ways, revolutionary.
Depression was not a word most families used openly. It was confused with laziness, or overthinking. Searching for a therapy was taken as something only seriously mad people did.
Then a time come when she did something that separated her from almost every public figure. She started talking about it openly and shared the journey about how she went through that phase – Depression and Anxiety. She described how, at the height of a career, she would wake up crying without knowing why. She lost interest in things she loved.
People relate to her story and the response was immediate and overwhelming. People admitted that they too, had been struggled from mental illness.
THE LIVE LOVE LAUGH FOUNDATION
In 2015 she founded The Live Love Laugh Foundation, an organization dedicated to spreading awareness about mental health in India. She said “Through my journey to recovery, I understand that lack of awareness associated with mental illness. And that gave me a purpose to set up The Live Love Laugh Foundation.
It has created resources in multiple Indian Languages. It trained people to be better listeners and first responders when someone is struggling.
The foundation worked with schools, workplaces and colleges. Helped more than 21,931 persons with mental illness in 15 districts in eight states. LLL also led a public awareness campaign such as “#notAshamed” and “Dobara Poocho”. That encourage open discussion about mental health and checking in on people in distress.
The You Are Not Alone Program, that reaches 5000+ students and 300+ teachers. It didn’t stop at classrooms, but the whole school management and parents acknowledge that this is a subject that demands attention and a sense of responsibility.
Why Awareness is necessary
In India who speaks matters as much as what it said. When a person like Deepika – successful, beautiful and says “I struggled with Depression,” it sends a message that: this can be happen to anyone.
It challenges that if your life is good on the outside, it must be feel better on the inside too. It gave a sense of acceptability- especially to young people that to take their inner pain seriously. It regularizes the act seeking help and going to a therapist.
Deepika ‘s role in this change lies not in claiming authority over the subject but in normalizing it. she didn’t present herself as an expertise in this field. she showed as someone who had been through it and chose not to hide it. And that is where her impact on society- A conversation that felt distant a subject once avoided now finds space in everyday life.
Recognized as mental heath ambassador
She achieved a milestone after a journey of 10 years, in October 2025 on World Mental Health Day she was honored to be appointed as first- ever Mental Health Ambassador under Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW). The partnership going to focus on removing the stigma, raising awareness and strengthen the government efforts to prioritize mental well-being, Promote Tele MANAS (Tele- Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States), and other government approved mental health resources.
Well, India is still having a long way to go in mental Healthcare. But the way of expressing is changed - and Deepika Padukone is a significant reason why.
She inspires that you don’t have to silence your struggles or carry them alone. Speaking up doesn’t fix everything in a day but it will help in a steady way. And overtime, what ones felt heavy will loosen its grip.
