Charu Pandey: the girl who cracked 19 Government exams at 23
From small town of Raipur to Rashtrapati Bhavan – a 23 years old journey rewriting what ambitions looks like for a generation of young Indians.
By a special correspondent
In a country while cracking a single government examination is considered a life- defining achievement- one that families celebrate for years- Charu pandey from Tilda-Neora in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur district has done something that seems almost impossible: she cleared not one not five, but nineteen competitive Central government exams. And she did all this before turning 24.
The story of Charu Pandey, is not a story of genius. It is, by her own admission, a story of patience, discipline, and an almost stubborn refusal to stop.
A small town dream. A national record
Charu Pandey a resident from Raipur Tilda, began her journey with the most modest of ambitions- to secure a government job. There was nothing unreal about that dream. Millions of young Indians share it every year. What sets Charu apart was what happened next.
While waiting for one exam results, she continued prepared for another one. This continues efforts resulted in her passing a total of 19 competitive examinations, including SSC CGL, SSC GD, SSC CHSL, IBPS PO, SBI.
The list reads like checklist of India’s most fiercely contested recruitment process. She conquered the apex exams of staff selection commissions, in banking she cleared both clerical and office-level tracks. She also proved her versatility by clearing the Delhi Police recruitment, Chhattisgarh Sub-Inspector exam, and Transport Sub- Inspector examination.
She is currently serving as an Assistant Audit Officer (AAO) at the Chennai office of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India.
No coach. Just commitment
Perhaps the most powerful aspect of Charu‘s achievement is how she got there. She achieved this remarkable feat through discipline preparation, effective time management, and consistent efforts, proving that success does not always require expensive coaching programmes.
In a landscape where coaching institutions cities like Kota, Delhi and Hyderabad charges lakhs of rupees and promise guaranteed results. Charu story is quiet but powerful counter-narrative. She came from a small town without the infrastructure of premium test-prep culture, and still outperformed millions.
In school she was good at Mathematics but considered herself an average student in other subjects. She believes that success comes from continuous hard work and discipline not just by talent.
“The most important thing has been time management. I used to study by managing my time properly. I was not focused on completing the entire syllabus, whatever I studied, I gave it my 100 per cent.”
Her parents have a different vision of her. They wanted her to pursue a career in teaching and become a teacher or professor, but she chose the path of preparing for competitive exams. - and her family fully supported her decision.
The mind behind the method
What does it take, mentally, to keep preparing after you’ve already cleared one, five and ten exams? Charu answer is refreshingly grounded. She says it was never in her mind that she would be able to crack 19 exams- her goal was simply to get a government job. Each exam she attempted was just the next step, never a performance for the record books.
Her approach to self-care was equally measured. She would go out for a walk for 10 minutes to half an hour, or take a five-to ten-day trip with family- small but deliberate breaks that kept her mind sharp across a multi-year marathon of preparation.
Her interest in finance was not accidental. She always keens for mathematics and wanted to understand how the massive amount of tax paid by citizens is actually utilized- a curiosity that eventually led her to the CAG, the very institution that audits the nation’s accounts.
Recognition at the highest level
India has taken note. For her achievement. Charu will be honored with the prestigious ‘At-Home’ award at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Independence Day. President Droupadi Murmu will officially honor Charu Pandey with a Gold medal at the upcoming Independence Day national celebrations. It is a fitting symmetry- one extraordinary woman from Chhattisgarh being recognized by another.
A message to the nation’s youth
Charu’s advice for aspirants facing repeated failures comes from real experience and hard-earned wisdom, not empty motivation or false reassurance.
She says one should not get discouraged by failure or by not getting the desired result in an exam. Opportunities are not in short supply. If continuous hard work and efforts are made in the right direction, success is guaranteed. Every year brings opportunities for many good jobs- all that is needed is patience, self-confidence, and consistent hard work. She also has her eyes on the future. She wants to pursue a PhD and also wishes to prepare for the UPSC.
Nineteen exams cleared. A Gold Medal from the President. A CAG posting Chennai. And she is just 23.
For every young woman in a small town who has been told that her dreams are too big for her circumstances. Charu Pandey from Tilda- Neora, Raipur, has a simple undeniable answer: Keep going. Things will eventually fall into place the way they are meant to.
