Kakoli Ghosh to Lead The Rebel Bloc with 20 MPs Support
The rebellion within TMC began when a group of MPs from Trinamool Congress (TMC) decided to break away from the party to form a separate block. The well-recognized senior leader of TMC, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar emerged as the face of this rebel faction. The rebel MPs emphasized as they have the support of enough number of Lok Sabha MPs i.e., 20, they can form a separate bloc under anti-defection law.
The two-third majority allows the rebel MPs to legally merge with any other party without being disqualified. Based on this claim, the rebel faction plans to join National Citizens Party of India (NCPI) under the leadership of Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar as the president of new party. The leaders described the merger as an attempt to provide a new political direction and to strengthen their position in parliament.
Additionally, they expressed willingness to work with prime minister Narender Modi led-government as well as announced their support to National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The group also demanded for a separate seating arrangement as an independent parliamentary bloc in the meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker.
In case of being officially recognized, this development could mark a major political split in Trinamool Congress. It will not only reduce the TMC’s strength in the parliament but may also strengthen the opposition politics. However, the results still depend on the decision of speaker and whether the merger meets all legal requirement under anti-defection law.
