13 Lakh Women Benefits From Priyadarshini Scheme
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government of Kerela, headed by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan recently launched a free bus travel scheme named Priyadarshini Free Travel Scheme for women. The scheme got massive response as more than 13.29 lakh women traveled for free on KSRTC ordinary buses despite the first day. While government introduced the scheme on June 15, it witnessed a strong public participation when number of women passengers increased from 7.34 lakh to 13.29 lakh.
The scheme significantly represents as the new government welfare programme that allows women and transgender people to easily travel with zero-fare. It aims to improve transportation facilities in a state for women as well as to improve access to work, education and essential service for them. The scheme was one of government key “Indira Guarantees” that was announced during the time of assembly election campaigns.
The Kerela Government described Priyadarshini as its attempt to make public transport more inclusive and affordable for women and highlighted its motive to strengthen women’s mobility and independence. The scheme is being monitored by authorities to keep check on proper implementation and financial impact of scheme in coming months.
